Carnival Cruise Line Structure

Continuing off of my Chapter 11 blog, I wanted to take the idea of organizational structure from Chapter 12 to discuss Carnival Cruise Line. Obviously, this will be looking at Carnival Corporation, the umbrella parent company that consists of Carnival Cruise Line and 9 other brands. This structure is how Carnival Cruise Line operates efficiently as well as how Carnival Corporation has been able to diversify its products, experiences, and revenue in the industry.
Carnival has an expanded M-structure for their leadership of Carnival Corporation. It obviously starts with the Board of Directors. Micky Arison, founder, is Chairman of the Board. The rest of the board consists of former NBA executives, former Naval Officers and Knights, current president of Carnival Cruise Line, and other major executives of companies. This board is responsible for the decision making of the entire umbrella of brands. One of the unique things about this board is the variety of industries each person comes from. You have entertainment, naval knowledge, finance, and hotels, and much more. This allows for each person to have some preview into what should be happening within each cruise line. Below the board of directors is where the different group comes in. While it is senior executive, it is a little bit more extensive. You have basically senior executive of the umbrella company mixed in with the leads of each brand. For instance, you do have Micky Arison as President and then CFO, CMO, etc. This group also has the President of each cruise line, including Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line. In total, this entire group is called the "Officers" and they truly govern the overall day-to-day operations of the umbrella brand.
Under the Officers comes the actual senior executives for each brand. For instance, under Christine Duffy at Carnival Cruise Line, they also have all of the other necessary executives including CMO, CFO, etc. This is the same across all other cruise brands. They all have a leadership structure within their own brand that then helps govern from executives to senior leadership to managers to regular staff.

All of the brands under the Carnival Corp. Umbrella
In terms of the qualities of the structure, see below:
- Active Board: Technically the actual board isn't very active. This is because there are so many Officers that have amble backgrounds to handle a lot of the major decisions. You essentially have 15+ CEOs at the table of the Officer Chair. However, because some board members overlap with officers, there is a little bit of active initiation across the lines.
- There are both insiders and outsiders on the board to help work through different issues a cruise line may experience. To those who don't know, cruise lines are expansive. They have entertainment divisions, hotel divisions, restaurant divisions, and so much more. Therefore, you need a diverse group of directors to help advise a myriad of issues.

In terms of mid-level management, you have both shore side and on-board. Shore side has the typical CMO, CEO, etc. on down to individual contributors. On-board is a little bit different. You have the captain, who uses his team to run all ship activities that include manning the ship, steering it, etc. You also have the Cruise Directors, Entertainment Directors, Hotel Directors, and Restaurant Directors that all lead the actual cruise activities on the ship. From there down, you have management and individual contributors, usually totaling more than 2,000 on ship. The organizational structure of Carnival Corp. and Cruise Line is quite extensive.
